West Indies great Ian Bishop heaped praise on Sri Lankan cricketers after they defeated Australia in the third ODI match amid the ongoing economic crisis in the island nation.

Sri Lanka beat Australia by 6 wickets in the third match to lead the five-match ODI series 2-1. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis stitched a match-winning 170-run partnership for the second wicket before Mendis retired out for 87. Nissanka went onto score 137 while chasing Australia’s 292-run target.

“Cricketers shining brightly through the most unfortunate hardship and economic gloom in Sri Lanka. Terrific back to back wins,” Bishop tweeted.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka wants his team to repeat the 1992 home victory against Australia. The 1992 Australia tour of Sri Lanka was the last time that Sri Lanka defeated the Down Under side 2-1 in the three-match bilateral ODI series.

The island nation is going through a severe economic crisis. The country witnessed a shortage of foreign currency reserves which has had a huge impact on curtailing imports, including essentials such as fuel and medicines.

Violent protests erupted across Sri Lanka and it led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. The new Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been appealing for foreign help to bail out the country.

A 2-1 up Sri Lanka will play Australia in the fourth ODI on June 21 in Colombo.
