Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips will miss England’s Nations League games against Italy and Germany after picking up a reoccurring shoulder injury. This most recent injury may force the defensive midfielder out of England’s World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old’s 42 million-pound move from Leeds United to Manchester City has not gone according to plan. The Yorkshire midfielder has struggled with injuries and has only played for 14 minutes in total across three games for City.

Surgery is thought to be a strong consideration for Phillips, who was not picked for his team’s 3-0 victory at Wolves on Saturday. Spain international Rodri has started every game of this campaign so far in the absence of a fully-fit Phillips, with defender John Stones stepping into the role of a holding midfielder during their win against Wolves. Phillips is yet to start a game for Pep Guardiola and last made an appearance in a late cameo off the bench in the victory against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.

But Phillips still remains a favourite of England manager Gareth Southgate and was also named England’s player of the year last season. Since making his debut in 2020, the 26-year-old has represented his country 23 times. It still remains unclear if Southgate will call for a replacement for the Nations League matches against Italy and Germany, since he still has four orthodox midfielders as options in that area of the pitch.

England will face Italy in Milan on September 23, before hosting Germany on September 26 in the UEFA Nations League. Later in the year, the Three Lions will begin their World Cup campaign against Iran on November 21, before facing the USA on November 26, and finishing off their group-stage matches by locking horns with Wales on November 30.
