Jaipur: This festive season, forget saying cheers with Chivas | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: The city’s premium liquor stock has thinned and customers have a slim chance of finding their favourite brands as liquor vends have been hit by a supply shortage for the past two months.
Most of the famous premium liquor brands, including Black Label, Red Label, Chivas Regal, Glenlivet 18, Ardmore and Jim Beam, among others, are not available in the over 400 vends in various parts of the city.
Due to the shortage during the festival season, many customers are forced to go to neighbouring Gurgaon, New Delhi and Noida to buy and refill their stock. The supply has gone down when the demand peaks during festivals.
Nilesh Mewara, president of Rajasthan Liquor Welfare Society, said, “After the new policy was implemented, liquor business had become customer oriented and traders have to make brands available. There are no premium brands available now and it’s not a revenue loss only for traders, but also for the government during the tourist and festival seasons.”
Old liquor traders are surviving on quota left over from last year. New traders, who bought vends this year, continue to look at Rajasthan State Beverages Corporation Ltd (RSBCL) depots for supply. They alleged that it has affected their credibility.
“Almost all the vends are facing shortage of premium liquor. The demand has increased manifold due to marriages and festival season, but we are running out of stock. If the department fails to provide stock for the next few days, vends will be left with only cheaper brands, which are not that profitable,” said Amar Singh, working at a wine store.
Top official sources at the excise department admitted that there was a crisis and assured to sort out the matter soon.
An official source said, “For many companies supplying premium brands, the department has not determined the ex-distillery price (EDP) of liquor for the past 10 years or even more. This has resulted in companies abruptly stopping supply as they face losses due to increase in transport and other costs. There is also a shortage across the country or a few brands as the companies have reduced production.”
