7 cops suspended inSriganganagar afterlawyer’s suicide | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Two inspectors were among seven Sriganganagar police personnel suspended after the family of a lawyer who died by suicide on Monday accused local cops of harassing him.
The decision to suspend the cops was taken on Tuesday night following an agitation by local residents. Police said they did not find any suicide note.
SP Anand Sharma said Gharsana SHO inspector Madan Lal and inspector Surendra Pachar were among the suspended police personnel. “Besides the two, we have also suspended two sub-inspectors, one assistant-sub inspector (ASI), one head-constable and a constable,” he said.
The victim, Vijay Singh Jhorad, was a resident of Gharsana. An advocate by profession, Jhorad allegedly hanged himself in his house on Monday.
The victim’s family said he was being tortured by the police after he launched an agitation against the peddling and consumption of drugs in the area.
Sharma, however, said Jhorad had caught some youths in April accusing them of being drug peddlers. “Police did not recover any narcotic substance from the youth. They were arrested under preventive measures. They were released on bail the next day,” Sharma said.
He said the youths had also filed a complaint alleging that Jhorad and others had thrashed them and taken Rs 8,000 from them. A video of the incident had later emerged, Sharma said.
However, Jhorad along with others went to the police station and demanded the arrest of the youths. Police forced them to leave following a brief ruckus.
Jhorad then filed an FIR against the police staff, while the youths also filed an FIR against him under the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act, police said.
The deceased’s family alleged that ever since Jhorad had launched an agitation against drugs in the area, the police had been harassing him and even thrashed him.
