A five-year-old boy slipped and fell into a 150-feet deep open borewell in a Madhya Pradesh village on Wednesday, police said.
Police have identified the boy as Dipendra Yadav, son of a farmer Akhilesh Yadav.
“The boy slipped and fell into the borewell while playing. He is stuck at about 25 feet,” Sachin Sharma, superintendent of police of Chhatarpur district over 300km from state capital Bhopal.
“A team of officials from the district administration and local police reached the spot, and a rescue operation is underway to pull the boy out safely from the borewell,” the SP said.
A team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has reached the spot with JCB machines, while a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is on the way, he added.
Additional chief secretary Rajesh Rajora said, “Oxygen is being supplied from cylinders, and emergency lights have been arranged. The activities of the boy are being recorded through cameras. An NDRF team of 27 jawans has left from Lucknow and will reach the spot soon.”
The boy is looking healthy and talking with the family members, he added.

Gurugram: A retired army havildar who was shot dead inside his residence at Basai enclave in Sector 10 on Monday, was allegedly killed by his brother-in-law who wanted to avoid repaying him a loan of ₹1.5 lakh, police said on Wednesday. According to police, Naveen Kumar (21) was arrested from a hotel in Rohtak on Tuesday evening. The pistol used in the murder and four live cartridges were seized from Kumar’s possession.

Traffic snarled in Delhi as the national capital welcomed the first monsoon showers on Thursday morning bringing much-needed respite from the heat and humidity. The India Meteorological Department announced the arrival of southwest monsoon in Delhi, which usually arrives in the national capital on June 27 and covers the entire country by July 8. Delhi received its first monsoon shower on Thursday, providing relief from the scorching heat. Taking to Twitter, the Delhi Traffic Police said, “As per the India Meteorological Department report, Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi. Commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly.” Barapullah, Ring Road and ITO were among several parts of Delhi that saw heavy traffic due to incessant rainfall.

First monsoon rain leaves Chandigarh waterlogged
In the first major spell this monsoon, intense rain for two hours during peak office hours on Thursday morning left Chandigarh and adjoining Panchkula and Mohali towns waterlogged, leading to traffic jams. The India Meteorological Department classifies rain between 64.5mm and 115.5mm as heavy. Till 11.30am, Yamunanagar recorded the highest rainfall in the region with 73mm followed by Chandigarh 68.2mm, Mohali 55mm, Panchkula 49.5mm, Patiala 23mm, Ambala 15 mm and trace rain in Ludhiana.
